Divisions
These paintings were created over the past year, as I considered the many ways we are divided in modern life.
Process
I begin each painting on my computer, using a hand-coded algorithm to generate a set of digital images. I then choose an image that I find interesting due to its structure, composition, etc. This digital image forms the foundation for the physical work.
Each painting is then created as a series of layers, in the same way that a computer would draw them on the screen. While each work starts as a very precise digital image, my inevitably imperfect painting process brings a human element to the creation process. I enjoy this digital/physical dialogue, finding that a work often expands beyond what I'd originally envisioned as a result of the messier realities of a physical medium compared to the strictness required by computer code.
